Example of Ventallation

A roof must be ventilated for proper airflow. Proper airflow being, intake through the soffet vents and exhaust up and out through the ridgevent (as shown in the above picture). We find soffet vents and ridgevents to be the most esthetically pleasing form of ventilation; however, box vents also do the job.

If a roof is properly ventilated, and the house is properly insulated shingle color should not make a difference in the temperature of the roof. Most homeowners prefer the darker colored shingles simply because lighter colored shingles look dingy and dirty much quicker. Shingle manufactures are publishing only a two degree difference between the light and dark shingles. Make sure your roof is properly ventilated and choose a color of shingle that suits your decor.
