SHINGLES
Three-Tab Shingle
Three-tab shingles are the roofing industry's standard. They consist of two layers of asphalt around a fiberglass mat core covered with granules, and notched into three tabs. Three-tab shingles give a smooth consistent look to a roof. They are the most economical shingles without sacrificing quality or weatherability. Below is a diagram of an Owens Corning three-tab shingle; all manufactures make their shingles in a very similar manner. Three Tab Shingle

Dimensional Shingles
"Dimensional or Architectural" shingles are also called laminated shingles. They are created by bonding two asphalt shingles together, giving them a distinct three-dimensional appearance. Because of this three dimensional appearance, dimensional shingles resemble wood shake, yet are significantly more fire retardant than wood shake. (Some areas will no longer permit wood shake shingles to be applied because of the fire hazards. A dimensional shingle will give a similar look to your home, while providing greater safety and security to your family.) Dimensional shingles are generally heavier in weight and provide greater weatherability.
